Eun Sun Kim – biography

The 2017/2018 season brings Eun Sun Kim to North America for the first timewhere she will debut at Houston Grand Opera with La Traviata. Further important operatic debuts this season are at the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich (Hänsel und Gretel) and Opernhaus Zürich (Carmen). She will also return to Semperoper Dresden (Rigoletto), Berlin State Opera (Ariadne), Bergen National Opera (Flying Dutchman) and Oper Frankfurt (La Sonnambula). Concert engagements will lead her to Aarhus, Oslo, Malmö and Bergen.

Last season led her back to the Royal Opera Stockholm with Il Barbiere di Siviglia and the Staatsoper Berlin with Madama Butterfly, Ariadne auf Naxos and La Traviata, Le Nozze di Figaro at the Opéra de Toulon and a new production of Carmen at the Den Norske Opera in Oslo. Additionally, she conducted a.o. concerts with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Norwegian Radio Orchestra.

In the 2015/2016 season she made her successful debuts at Royal Opera Stockholm with Madama Butterfly, at the Semperoper Dresden with La Boheme, at Staatsoper Berlin with Un ballo in maschera and at the Cologne Opera with the new production of Lucia di Lammermoor. At the Oper Frankfurt she conducted Lehar’s Graf von Luxemburg and Richard Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer.

In autumn 2014 Eun Sun Kim conducted the highly praised new production of La Sonnambula at the Oper Frankfurt, followed by performances of Hänsel and Gretel and Die Fledermaus at the Wiener Volksoper. On New Year’s Eve 2014 she led the semi-concertante production of Csardasfürstin at the Oper Frankfurt, as well as performances of Puccini’s La Boheme in the very same season. Concert engagements for the season 2014/2015 led her to Nancy and in summer 2015 she made her debut with the Beethoven Orchester Bonn.

In autumn 2012 the conductor made her celebrated debut at the Oper Frankfurt with La Boheme, which led to her international breakthrough. Subsequently, Eun Sun Kim debuted at the English National Opera in London with a new production of Die Fledermaus in autumn 2013, and led concerts in Nancy, Palermo and Torino. She returned to the Wiener Volksoper with La Traviata at the Vienna Volksoper in the 2013/2014 season. In summer 2014 she led a new production of Tosca at the Macerata Opera Festival.

During the 2011/2012 season Eun Sun Kim conducted concerts with the local philharmonic orchestras in Stuttgart and Ulm and gave her debut in Meiningen with Wagner’s early opera Das Liebesverbot, followed by a philharmonic concert. In June 2012 she made her very successful debut at the Wiener Volksoper with Bizet’s Carmen, which resulted in an invitation for regular guest performances.

In spring 2010 she gave her debut at the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid and at the Teatro Real with Rossini’s Il Viaggio a Reims, followed by her very successful debut in the 2010/2011 season with Puccini’s La Boheme at the Oper Graz, where she was immediately re-invited for a concert just a few weeks later.

Eun Sun Kim studied composition and conducting in Seoul and continued her training in Stuttgart where she graduated with distinction.

Immediately after graduation she was awarded First Prize at the “International Jesús López Cobos Opera Conducting Competition.” 2017/18
