'Extra number', In the foyer after the concert

Duration 1 hour and 45 minutes (Incl. 30 minute break)

"I would like to write you a violin concerto," wrote the composer Felix Mendelssohn to his friend, the star violinist Ferdinand David. "I have one in E minor in my head, and the beginning will not leave me alone." And the opening of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto is among classical music's most iconic, stormy and passionate, with the solo violin in the role of the ultimate romantic hero. Here, it is the DR Symphony Orchestra's 1st concertmaster Soo-Jin Hong who is allowed to be the soloist with his own orchestra.

There is an enormous life force flowing through Dvorák's Eighth Symphony. Here, the Czech landscape is translated into tones, and birdsong, hunting horns and folk music meet with great energy. The last movement is preceded by a fierce trumpet signal, and during a rehearsal, the conductor Rafael Kubelik is said to have remarked: "Gentlemen, in Bohemia trumpets never announce war – they invite to dance!"

The evening begins with an overture by composer Maria Theresia von Paradis, who was a close friend of Mozart and among Europe's most admired pianists, while also having a flourishing career as a composer. The overture to the musical Der Schulkandidat is among her few surviving works, with catchy melodies and colorful woodwinds.

Extra number

After the concert, you can linger in the foyer for a half-hour 'Extra number', where you can get closer to the musicians of the DR Symphony Orchestra and experience them playing together in a more intimate setting. For 'Extra number', the bar is open, the lights are dimmed and the musicians have put together the program themselves and talk about the music. 'Extra number' takes place in the foyer of DR Koncerthuset and is included in the concert ticket.
